The Sun God Belenos Visits Balerno for Summer Solstice

Updated: Jun 25

Ancient festivals offer a fantastic educational opportunity to explore the cultures from which we originated. Through the myths, art, and history of the Celts of the British Isles, we can learn to experience nature deeply again, treating it with reverence; they teach us the importance of living harmoniously with the Earth's cycles.

Belenus, a prominent figure in the Celtic pantheon, rises from a tapestry of vibrant mythologies that stretched across ancient Europe. As a principal deity, he embodied the power of the sun, crucial for life and growth. The Celts regarded Belenus as a guiding force, integral to their agricultural practices and seasonal cycles.

With a touch of magic and our assistance, Belenos will descend to Earth in human form again for the Summer Solstice. Together, we'll venture into the forest to help him learn about the fascinating life and vital role of honey bees. This will ensure he impresses his beloved Danu, Mother Earth, without fail!

Accompanied by the spirit of the bee, we'll sing songs and brainstorm ways to support bees during this ecological crisis. Our family event for the Summer Solstice promises storytelling, crafting Celtic knots and spirals, needle-felting, a treasure hunt, and joyous songs around the bonfire.

[Plus, every reason is good to spend time in the woods!]
